Darling Violetta by Calandra Disclaimer: Not mine, don't sue, you know the drill. Distribution: Ask First Feedback: Please Rating: G Author's Notes: This is the first in my Doyl's past series. A middle aged woman with fiery red hair plaited down her back paced her small kitchen. She didn't have much spade to do this and soon knocked her chin on one of the three vinyl covered chairs. She swore and threw her chequered wash cloth on the table. "Carolyn, sit down." Another woman, this one seemingly in her early twenties, said not unkindly. Carolyn just glared at the dark woman. She reclined comfortably on the green vinyl chair, ignoring the creaks and watched the older woman. The later only dug her fingernails into the flowery, plastic table cloth. "Don't call me that, Violet, we're not friends… we never will be." "Alright, Ms. Doyle," Violet responded with a roll of her eyes. She glanced about the room lazily, her gaze moving from the flaky wallpaper to a picture frame near her elbow. She picked it up and looked at it for a moment, a light smile on her lips. "He's a good looking boy, reminds me of his father." Carolyn ripped the picture out of her guest's hands and cradled it close to her heart. "Allen is nothing like his father, ya hear me? Nothing." She glanced down at the picture, her bright blue eyes fogging up slightly. "I won't let you people tell my baby he's a monster." "Carolyn, you…" Violet stopped when a teenaged boy stepped into the room. He smiled brightly and placed a kiss on his mother's cheek. "G'afternoon Mum," he said then set his eyes, his mother's starting blue eyes, on Violet. He took in her slender form, her silky black hair and her purple… he blinked. No, blue eyes. "Who's your friend?" "No one. Go get changed Allen, suppers in 20 minutes." He glanced at the cleared stove and empty oven but nodded and did as she said. Violet watched him go and opened her mouth to talk but Carolyn interrupted her. "I don't want to hear it Violet. We've known each other for near 20 years and I've hear about my responsibility of the world and all the rhubarb. I was always good to the Old Ones, honoured your ways." She sobbed but that removed nothing of the strength from her bearing. "You can't take my son away." Violet touched Carolyn's shoulder gently, approaching her as she would a frightened mare. She lifted her chin tenderly so that their eyes met. "If I just wanted to take him, Carolyn, I would have done it 17 years ago. Something higher than you or I, perhaps even higher then my wise Goddess and your merciful God, has a plan for him. We could teach him so many things about his coming path…" The teary eyed mother tore away and started making dinner, ignoring Violet's presence all together. "The truth will be thrust upon him some day. Will you be able to explain to him why there's a part of his being that he can't understand let alone control?" "Get the hell outta my house you thrice damned fair…" Carolyn yelled but stopped when she noticed that Violet had vanished from her spot. "You say somethin' Mum?" Allen asked coming down the steps. Carolyn didn't answer. Instead she pulled him into a tight hug, stifling his breath. She kissed the top of his head and whispered fervently. "Never leave me, please, never leave me." "Alright Mum." He answered, a little unsure of what was going on but she released him at that. She went back to work as if nothing had happened leaving her son to stare at her. He sat at the table and would have continued to watch her but noticed a medallion where the young woman had been sitting earlier. He picked up what appeared to be a Celtic Sidhe knot with Gaelic inscriptions at the back. Without thought he placed it in his pocket. ************************************************************************ Violet watched him take her medallion from a mirror-like surface floating before her. She turned when she sensed a presence behind her. The Oracles stared at her impassively. "You come before us disguised lesser being." The male accused "Illusion lessens truth." His sister chimed in waving a hand before Violet. The later glanced down at her elongated, grey limbs and sharp claws before raising her purple eyes… the only feature that would still be considered beautiful by human standards. "Fae magick is lessening in their world yet you leave him that bauble. Why?" The female asked evenly. "I thought you were all knowing." "Do not forget your place, lesser being. Your people have served the powers for as long as evil has walked the earth in the name of your Goddess and her earthly body. You have pledged your life and obedience to the higher good." Violet ran a claw along the marble wall and sighed. "He's going to have it hard. I wanted to give him all the protection that my people could offer." "He has yet to prove himself." The male said with a yawn. "He is the one, I know it. He is the promised one who will save the world." "We will see." The oracles said in unison before vanishing. Once they were gone, she turned back to the 'mirror'. She watched him smile brightly as he said something to his mother. She captured that smile in her mind, foreseeing a time where it would be all to rare. "I hope I'm wrong." She whispered as the darkness enveloped her. "Goddess, for once let me be wrong."
